Ode to Literacy

Reading is an act of civilization; it’s one of the greatest acts of civilization because it takes the free raw material of the mind and builds castles of possibilities.” —Ben Okri

This blog is a passion project…

As a previous high-school-dropout who couldn’t read or write to being an educator with two master’s degrees, I understand the depth of breath of being literally lost. Once homeless, a single mother, and failing many classes before I passed one, fiction finally grabbed my attention and led to my journey of falling in love with learning. Hence, my desire to support literacy. This page is for us.

…why literacy?

Literacy is a human right. Many people do not have the resources or opportunities available to journey into the world of scholarship. With 50% of the population illiterate, we have our answers as to why we have health, self-esteem, self-control, emotional intelligence, economic, political, poverty, crime, civil engagement …issues. Literacy changes lives through empowerment and knowledge. Let’s be the change.
